Why Retainer Care Matters
Retainers spend a lot of time in your mouth, where saliva, plaque, and mineral deposits can build up. Skip regular cleaning, and that clear retainer can start looking cloudy or smelling less than fresh.
How to Clean Your Retainer
1. Drop one PUL cleaning tablet into warm water or an ultrasonic cleaner.
2. Soak your retainer for 15 minutes.
3. Brush gently and rinse thoroughly before wearing.
Retainer Care Products from PUL
Retainer care looks a little different depending on what you wear. For removable retainers, cleaning tablets and a retainer case help with cleaning and storage, while a removal tool can make taking out a snug retainer easier. Daily flossing is important for everyone, and floss picks can help clean between teeth and around the wire if you have a permanent retainer. Whatever type you wear, a consistent routine helps keep your retainer clean and ready for everyday use.
Retainer FAQs
Why is my clear retainer cloudy?
Saliva, plaque, and mineral deposits build up on the surface over time. A daily soak with a dedicated retainer cleaner helps break down buildup and keep your retainer cleaner for longer.
How do I remove my retainer without breaking it?
Use PUL’s original retainer removal tool to gently unhook the back edge on each side instead of pulling from the front. This avoids bending or cracking the plastic.
How do I clean around a permanent retainer?
Since a permanent retainer stays bonded to the backs of your teeth, you'll need to clean around the wire. Brush carefully along the bonded areas (don’t forget under bonded areas!), then use floss picks to clean between your teeth and around hard-to-reach spots.
Can I use retainer cleaning tablets on a permanent retainer?
Our cleaning tablets are designed for any removable appliances that can be soaked. Since a permanent retainer stays in place, focus on brushing and flossing around the wire instead.
Why does my retainer smell even after I rinse it?
A quick rinse removes loose debris, but it may not remove all the plaque and residue that cause odors. Add regular cleaning to your routine and let your retainer dry as directed before storing it. If the smell sticks around despite proper care, ask your orthodontist to check it.
When should I replace my retainer?
Cracks, warping, a poor fit, or new discomfort are all reasons to check in with your orthodontist. If your retainer doesn't seem fully seated, a retainer seating tool can help guide it into place. Don't force it or bite down hard if it won't fit properly. Your orthodontist can help determine whether it needs to be adjusted or replaced.
